Santo Domingo, March 2020 – The Dominican Republic will play a leading role in the Latin American Focus, an event that takes place within the MAFIZ, the industrial area of Spain’s Malaga Festival. Each year a Latin American country is honored during the Festival. In this particular year, in coordination with the country’s General Film Directorate (DGCINE), the Festival has put together a special program to promote the very talented and surprising Dominican audiovisual industry. During the event, Dominican professionals and international industry experts will meet to discuss their particular projects and financing possibilities.
The official presentation of the Dominican Republic Focus will take place on Wednesday, March 18, in La Village del Mar (Palmeral de las Sorpresas). On Friday, March 20, at 4:00 p.m. the Dominican delegation will feature the film “Malpaso,” directed by Héctor Valdez, a film which is currently competing in the official section of the Malaga Festival. Héctor Valdez and the film’s leading actor Luis Bryan Somesa Sánchez.
All Dominican films will be featured during “Focus Dominicana” at the Albéniz Theater during the week. The film “Cabarete,” directed by Iván Bordas, was featured on Monday, March 16 while “Mis 500 locos,” directed by Leticia Tonos, will be presented on Thursday, March 19.
Furthermore, within the MAFF Section (Málaga Festival Fund & Coproduction Event) the following films will be featured: “Orquídea,” by Pavel Marcano; “Pepe,” by Nelson Carlo de los Santos Arias, and “Posada” by Ayerim Villanueva, who will have the opportunity to meet with possible co-producers and financiers for future projects.
Also, the production titled “Morena,” by Victoria Apolinario andIván de Lara, will participate in the section Málaga Work in Progress and will qualify to participate in various award categories for the conclusion and post production of this project. Dominican actors Paula Cury and Julia Scrive Loyer will participate in the Málaga Talent category.
Latin American Focus is scheduled to take place from March 16 to 20. Its goal is to offer Dominican audiovisual talent the opportunity to meet with colleagues in the same field who will be able to help with the individual projects currently being worked on.
Also, to meet with possible international co-producers and strengthening the networking channels with Spanish and European audiovisual companies to receive possible funding.
