The Santo Domingo Metro is the public transport system that services Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic.
In 2005, during Leonel Fernández’s time in office and with an investment of more than $700 million, work began for the construction of the first urban underground system in Santo Domingo and in the Dominican Republic.
On February 27, 2008 the first official route successfully took place with the presence of Dominican authorities and with advice and supervision from technicians from the Metro in Madrid.
The Santo Domingo Metro has two lines and 30 stations in service, covering a total area of 48.5 kilometers (Line 1: 14.5km – Line 2: 34km).
The Oficina de Reordenamiento del Transporte (OPRET) is responsible for the management of the Santo Domingo Metro.
