Santo Domingo, February 13, 2019 – Distinguished Dominican movie actors Frank Perozo and Nashla Bogaert were officially crowned as the King and Queens of the National Carnival Parade 2019 during a well-attended reception headed by the Dominican Minister of Culture, Architect Eduardo Selman.
During the event, held at the National Palace of Fine Arts, Festival organizers provided those present with important details of this year’s festivity scheduled to take place on March 4, 2019, beginning at 2:00 p.m., in Santo Domingo’s seaside boulevard.
This year’s Carnival Parade will be dedicated to the north coast province of Puerto Plata and to Dominican folklore singer Casandra Damirón, who this year would have celebrated her 100th birthday.
Minister of Culture, Architect Eduardo Selman, accompanied by Vice Minister Edilí Pichardo, placed the corresponding crowns to actress Nashla Bogaert and actor Frank Perozo.
Both artists received from Minister Selman the plaques that names them as the King and Queen of this year’s Festival.
Before the coronation ceremony the Minister of Culture explained some of the reasons why actors Bogaert and Perozo were chosen to lead the Carnival Parade. Through their craft they have taken the Dominican film industry to new heights, thanks to the support provided by the government of Danilo Medina.
During the ceremony organizers introduced this year’s Carnival musical theme, titled Let the Carnival Troupes Come Out (Que salgan las comparsas), the first place winner in a special contest organized by the Ministry of Culture.
Also during the event the National Carnival Director Reyes Moore Montalvo, gave more details on this year’s carnival celebration, who explained that, for the first time, the country’s 32 provinces will hold their particular Carnival celebration. Representatives from the 32 provinces will also participate in the Carnival’s Grand Finale in Santo Domingo.
Moore Montalvo also explained that the Carnival troupes will reflect Dominican culture, expressed through special troupes that will represent the traditional Dominican Devils, Ali-Baba troupes, Individual Characters from various regions, Masked performers, as well as traditional and historic representations.
Minister Selman and his wife Gloria, along with Vice Minister Pichardo, participated in the event accompanied by other officials, such as: Vice Ministers Juan Morales and Oscar Holguín Veras, Billy Hasbún, Director of the Ministry’s International Relations; Milagros Peralta, Director of Human Resources and Altagracia Fernández, Director of Provinces, among other authorities.
On the Carnival’s King and Queen
Francisco Ernesto Perozo, born on November 25, 1977, is a Dominican actor, production assistant and producer.
He has participated in U.S. film and television productions. In 2002 he won the First Place Award as Best Actor in Milan’s International Film Festival for his performance in Washington Heights. He has also participated in local production projects, such as La soga (2009) and Ponchao (2013).
He filmed his first movie – Colao – through the local Caribbean Cinema company, and directed Dominican actor Manny Pérez in the movie Antonio, which tells the story of a coffee producer that abandoned his trade to devote his time to the love of his life.
He is known as one of the top Dominican actors. He was the lead actor, along with Nashla Bogaert, in the film Who’s the Boss? (¿Quién Manda?) in 2013.
Nashla Bogaert was born on May 11, 1986, in the city of San Francisco de Macorís, in the country’s central region. She is a renowned actress and television hostess, and known for the roles she has played in such films as ¿Quién Manda?, Código Paz, and Reinbou. Bogaert is a co-producer of the local Dominicana’s Got Talent, the Dominican version of the British production Got Talent, headed by Simón Cowell.
She won the country’s top award as Best Actress, through her participation in the film ¿Quién manda? She also won a special award in the Ibero-American 2014 Platinum Film Awards.
She has also worked in the following productions: Viajeros (2006); Yuniol (2007); Enigma (2008); Cristiano de la Secreta (2009); Asuntos Extranjeros (Cuba, 2012); ¿Quién Manda? (2013); Código Paz (2014); La Gunguna (2015); Ladrones (2015); Todos los hombres son iguales (2016); Todas las mujeres son iguales (2017); Colao (2017); Reinbou (2017); Trabajo Sucio (2018) and Nadie Muere en Ambrosía (2018).
