The Ministries of Environment and Natural Resources and Tourism as well as the National Office for Beautification announced that prior to Holy Week, they’ve cleaned-up 68 beaches and sea side resorts as part of an optimization, clean-up and recuperation program of public areas so that swimmers can take advantage of the vacation days of Easter vacation.

This year, the Environment Ministry is promoting a campaign to get to know the southern part of the country. They have drawn up easy-to-use maps which offer lots of information about the main beaches and spas near Lake Enriquillo.

In a joint press conference, Jaime David Fernández Mirabal, Francisco Javier García Fernández and Rafael Sosa explained that in addition to cleaning up the beaches they installed portable toilets, trash cans, street lights and fences along pedestrian walkways so that vacationers can enjoy their stay while also keeping the areas clean.

Fernández Mirabal stressed that both Ministers (Tourism and Environment) are working together to create a department of eco-tourism to combine efforts to manage the preservation of natural resources while also taking advantage of the tourism potential in the protected areas with a focus on sustainability.

Javier García confirmed that beginning with this project, they will launch a National Internal Tourism Development Plan so that Dominicans can better get to know the natural treasures of their country.

The main beaches that were cleaned up are located on the East coast and in the provinces that traditionally receive a lot of visitors during this holiday period, such as San Cristóbal, Peravia, Sánchez Ramírez, Samaná, Barahona, Pedernales and Montecristi.

The officials took advantage of the occasion to call on everyone to take care of the areas they visit and to contribute to keeping them clean and protecting and caring for the environment.
