VI International Theater Festival of Santo Domingo 2009 The International Theater Festival of Santo Domingo (FITE), organized by the Ministry of Culture now in its 6th year, will be hosting 39 shows to be put on by the best professionals in the area. The Festival will also host an exquisite selection of American and European theater companies which will perform on the main stages of Santo Domingo and Santiago de Los Caballeros. …the Festival includes a variety of comprehensive activities such as workshops given by directors, writers and technicians, many of whom are participating with national and international companies. Recently, the members of the Organizing Commission and the coordinating team for the event installed the new offices of the National and International Festival Managers, located in the west wing of the Fine Arts Palace, a space that has been the center point for this, the country’s most important theater festival. In addition to theater presentations, the Festival includes a variety of comprehensive activities such as workshops given by directors, writers and technicians, many of whom are participating with national and international companies. They will offer masters classes to be given by well-known actors, conferences, seminars and the Window Scene program, which is a space where Dominican theater groups meet and exchange ideas and proposals. The Organizing Commission of FITE 2009 is made up of such professionals as Bernarda Jorge, Deputy Secretary of Creativity and Popular Participation; Karina Noble, Executive Director; Basilio Nova, Director of the Narciso González Cultural Center; Carlota Carretero, Director of the Dominican Rodante Theater; Elvira Taveras, Director of the National Theater Company; Radhames Polanco, Theatrical Advisor of the Culture Ministry and Freddy Ginebra, Director de Theater House (Casa de Teatro). The technical and logistical coordination of the Festival is being done by a team of people that includes Katy Báez, Director of the Children’s Office, Elizabeth Ovalle, Deputy Director of the Narciso González Cultural Center as well as Clara Morel, Solanyi Gómez and Katy Casado. To that end, this extraordinary Festival will be will be held from June 17-24 in the main venues around the country. Special activities have been planned that seek to show off the hard work of the local scenery creators and to showcase their projects in the performing theaters and international artistic exchanges. The 2009 Festival organizers have invited a select group of programmers, festival directors and theater critics from Colombia, Spain, the United States and Mexico who will participate at the arts fair, VENTANA ESCENICA, which is a projection space from proposals and ideas from the national groups and scenery creators. As part of the FITE warm-up activities and with the idea of guaranteeing the integration and quality of the work to be presented by our artists in the second edition of the VENTANA ESCENICA, the National and International Office of Festivals and the Narciso González Cultural Center are organizing a workshop to be held this week, May 15 & 16. The workshop is called, “Presentation of Scenery Projects,” directed to all theater enthusiasts interested in adding another line to CV with their work of art. Participants of the workshop will receive creative tools and marketing hints on how to present their projects and the documentation of their work to a broader audience while bringing it up to the International Standard of Quality.
